Italy Marks 7th Anniversary of Genoa Bridge Disaster

Genoa: Italy on Thursday marked the seventh anniversary of the Genoa bridge disaster that killed 43 people on August 14, 2018. The Genoese commemorative ceremony for the first time took place in the space adjacent to the Memorial inaugurated last December.

According to Ansa News Agency, Archbishop Marco Tasca celebrated a Mass in memory of the 43 victims in the parish church of San Bartolomeo della Certosa, the first act of a day that includes other commemorative events promoted by the City of Genoa together with the Committee of Relatives of the Victims of the Morandi Bridge. The collapse “marked a severe reminder of public and private responsibilities regarding the safety of infrastructure. A point of no return to practices that generated a disaster of those proportions,” wrote the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message to Mayor Silvia Salis. “Infrastructure safety must not accept negligence.”
