Tajani Welcomes 31 Sick Gaza Children in Largest Medical Operation by Italy

Rome: Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Wednesday night welcomed 31 sick and injured Palestinian children to Italy in the largest such operation so far for the child casualties of Israel’s war on Gaza. “It was with deep emotion that I welcomed another group of Palestinian children evacuated from the Strip last night, who will be treated in our country,” said Tajani, who is also deputy premier.

According to Ansa News Agency, a total of three special flights arrived, between Rome, Milan, and Pisa, bringing 31 young patients and their families to Italy, totaling nearly 120 people. This is the largest medical operation conducted by Italy to date, marking the 14th medical evacuation since January 2024 to assist the Palestinian civilian population.

Thanks to the commitment of the Government, and in particular the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, since the beginning of the war, over 180 Palestinian children and approximately 400 of their families have been welcomed to Italy. Including family reunifications, 914 Palestinians have arrived in Italy from the Gaza Strip so far. These numbers position Italy as the leading Western country for Palestinians welcomed as part of humanitarian operations, surpassing all other European countries combined.

Tajani emphasized the ongoing support for the civilian population of Gaza and the pursuit of peace. He noted that children are a symbol of hope and the future, and ensuring their care and healthcare is a duty. He expressed gratitude to all the government agencies, the EU, the WHO, and the healthcare workers involved in making this evacuation possible and working on humanitarian missions.

A special mention was given to all the Farnesina staff, from diplomats to officials, from those at offices throughout the Middle East to those employed in the Crisis Unit. Tajani praised their great sense of national responsibility, noting that many dedicated their hearts and souls to this operation, even taking time away from their families. “I am proud to lead this extraordinary team,” he concluded.
