Italy Committed Against Desertification in Sahel Countries
Dakar: The Italian Embassy in Dakar participated in the launch of the second phase of an Italian initiative aimed at combating desertification in five Sahel countries: Burkina Faso, Niger, Ghana, Senegal, and Benin. This project focuses on the restoration of degraded areas and aims to enhance social and economic conditions, particularly for young women, in collaboration with local communities.
According to Ansa News Agency, the project receives funding from the Italian Ministry of the Environment and is implemented through the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Unccd) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN). During the event, the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Ispra) shared insights on the ongoing monitoring and evaluation activities concerning desertification and land degradation.
The event featured interventions from representatives of the African countries involved and included a field visit. Participants were welcomed at the Italian Embassy in Dakar by the Ambassador of Italy, Caterina Bertolini.
