Menstrual Hygiene Day Initiative Highlights Cultural Barriers in Ghana

Accra: Italy’s Ambassador to Accra, Laura Ranalli, participated in an initiative organized by Ghana’s Ministry of Gender, Childhood and Social Protection, along with the British High Commission and the United Nations Population Fund, to mark Menstrual Hygiene Day. The event aimed to highlight the cultural and social barriers preventing girls from managing their menstruation with dignity.

According to Ansa News Agency, the documentary titled ‘Barred by Blood: The Cultural Chains Holding Back Girls in Kyekyewere’ was screened during the event. It illustrated the cultural myths and discriminatory practices affecting girls’ education, freedom, and self-esteem, particularly in rural communities. The event gathered traditional and religious leaders, civil society organizations, development partners, and government officials, all calling for renewed efforts to end poverty and menstrual discrimination.

Minister for Gender, Childhood and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, renewed the call to action and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing menstrual health. She stressed that no girl should lose education or opportunities because of her period. “This documentary sheds light on stories that have too often remained in the shadows. It speaks of the lived experiences of our daughters, sisters, and future leaders,” the minister noted, urging participants to “watch, reflect and above all, act.”
