Italian Recognition of State of Palestine Nearing, Says Tajani

Rome: Italian Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Wednesday that Italy is moving closer to recognizing the State of Palestine. This development follows the release of the remaining Israeli hostages by Hamas, who were captured during the October 7 massacre.

According to Ansa News Agency, the Italian government, led by Premier Giorgia Meloni, had stipulated two main conditions for recognizing Palestine: the release of hostages and the exclusion of Hamas from political and military activities in Gaza and the West Bank. Tajani, addressing the Lower House, emphasized that these conditions are being met.

Tajani outlined a vision for a Gaza region liberated from Hamas’s influence and temporarily placed under international control, with significant involvement from Islamic countries. He emphasized the importance of establishing a democratic, peaceful, and non-denominational Palestinian state, governed by a renewed Palestinian National Authority.

He further underlined the necessity of mutual recognition between Israel and the proposed Palestinian state, stating that the recognition of Palestine is now closer to reality, contingent upon meeting the conditions set by the Italian Parliament.
