Bad Weather to Hit Southern Italy as Low-Pressure System Moves In

Rome: Bad weather is returning to parts of Italy with heavy rain set to hit the south and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, forecaster Lorenzo Tedici of iLMeteo.it said. A low-pressure system originating in Spain and fueled by colder currents from Russia is causing severe weather in Southern Italy.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tedici, a meteorologist and media manager for iLMeteo.it, indicated that the South can expect further bad weather over the weekend, while Central and Northern Italy will experience more stable conditions. Heavy showers are anticipated on Wednesday, particularly in Sardinia, Sicily, and Calabria. Specifically, heavy rain is expected in coastal and inland eastern Sardinia, the Tyrrhenian and eastern Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, and Ionian Calabria.

One of the hardest-hit areas will be between Crotone and Metaponto, where Sirocco winds and warm seas will cause persistent rainfall. On Thursday, the severe weather will persist in the same regions, with Puglia experiencing more significant effects. Tedici noted that over the weekend, another low-pressure system from the Algerian coast will impact the southern areas, leading to further potentially heavy rainfall.

In contrast, Central and Northern Italy will remain stable until at least Sunday, although another cyclone is predicted to arrive from France on Monday. Tedici concluded with a forecast of a very unstable period, with three cyclones potentially heading towards Italy.

In detail, on Wednesday, October 15th, the North will see clouds in the Po Valley with occasional mountain showers. The center will have local showers, particularly in Lazio, lower Abruzzo, and Molise, while the South will experience severe weather with rain and thunderstorms. On Thursday, the 16th, the North will have clouds over the Alps with rare showers and sunshine elsewhere. The center will see unstable weather in Abruzzo and Molise, and the South will continue to face severe weather with rain and thunderstorms. On Friday, the 17th, the North will have clouds over the Alps with rare showers and sunshine elsewhere. The center will see unstable weather in Abruzzo and Molise. The South will experience residual severe weather with scattered showers. The outlook for the weekend indicates a new cyclone bringing severe weather to the South, while the center and north will remain stable.
