Newspapers File Complaint Against Google AI Overviews

Rome: The Italian federation of newspaper publishers, FIEG, announced it has filed a complaint with the nation’s communications authority, Agcom, regarding Google’s AI Overviews service. The complaint is centered around concerns that the service is adversely affecting traffic to member websites, which could result in a significant impact on advertising revenues.

According to Ansa News Agency, similar complaints are being lodged in other countries, coordinated by the European Newspaper Publishers’ Association (ENPA). The collective effort seeks to urge the European Commission to initiate proceedings under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The publishers allege that Google’s AI Overviews, along with the more recent AI Mode feature, which replaces traditional search results, violate key provisions of the DSA.

The issue highlights a growing tension between traditional media outlets and tech giants, as publishers strive to protect their content and revenue streams in the digital age. The outcome of these complaints could have significant implications for the way digital content is managed and monetized in Europe.
