Italian Harvard Graduate Expresses Frustration Over Political Climate

Rome: Guglielmo, a young Italian graduate from Harvard University, expressed his concerns on Tuesday regarding the ongoing conflict between the prestigious institution and the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking at a meeting in Rome titled ‘Illiberal Turn in the USA’, Guglielmo highlighted the distress felt by himself and fellow students amidst the political turmoil.

According to Ansa News Agency, Guglielmo described the situation as one of “dismay,” emphasizing the feeling of being used as “bargaining chips” in a larger issue beyond their control. He noted that the common thread tying these conflicts together was the broader attack on various institutions, including not only Harvard but also sectors such as research, medicine, and justice. He cited examples such as the firing of the FDA’s head of vaccines, attacks on the central bank governor, and challenges faced by magistrates and the education system.

Guglielmo further pointed out accusations faced by the institution, including anti-Semitism during terrorist attacks two years ago, and a perceived lack of freedom of expression for non-left-wing individuals. These tensions culminated in the cancellation of research funds and tax breaks, as well as the restriction of international student admissions, who typically pay higher fees and thus represent significant income sources for the university.

He concluded by expressing the sense of discouragement felt by international students, who find themselves as “small pawns” in this extensive conflict, feeling powerless to effect change.
