Hungarian MP Criticizes EU Leaders for Political Interference in Hungary’s Governance

Budapest: Lorinc Nacsa, a member of parliament from the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP), accused top European Union officials of overt political interference during a session in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on October 9. Nacsa highlighted that EU figures, including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Manfred Weber, President of the European People’s Party, openly criticized the Hungarian government and expressed preferences for Hungary’s future leadership.

According to KDNP, during the immediate question hour in the Hungarian parliament, Nacsa expressed his concerns regarding the statements made by von der Leyen and Weber. He emphasized that such comments represented an unprecedented level of direct involvement by Brussels in Hungary’s domestic politics. Nacsa stated, ‘Brussels showed its teeth with unprecedented openness,’ referring to von der Leyen’s speech and Weber’s remarks during the plenary session.

Nacsa further asserted the sovereignty of the Hungarian electorate, stre
ssing that it is the Hungarian people who will determine their government, not external influences from the EU. He articulated a strong stance against what he described as attempts by EU officials to install a government in Hungary that aligns with Brussels’ preferences.

In response, Miklós Panyi, the Parliamentary and Strategic State Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, also criticized the European Parliament debate, suggesting that the focus of Europe’s leaders is misplaced. Panyi argued that rather than addressing the union’s broader challenges and strategic issues, EU leaders are preoccupied with undermining the Hungarian government. He declared that Hungary would resist any pressures from Brussels on matters such as military engagement, immigration, family protection, and utility costs, reinforcing the government’s commitment to national sovereignty.
