Hungarian Higher Education Renovation Aims to Bolster National Success, Says State Secretary

PÉCS: The Hungarian government has undertaken extensive renovations and developments in its higher education system, aiming to align student success with national development goals. This initiative, led by Veronika Varga-Bajusz, State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, focuses on enhancing educational environments and opportunities for students.

According to KDNP, Varga-Bajusz emphasized at the National Conference of Student Self-Governments (HÖOK) that recent efforts in higher education have benefited university students, with tangible outcomes reflected in both international rankings and daily life. Twelve Hungarian universities now rank in the top 5 percent globally, showcasing the success of these initiatives.

The renovations have improved campus facilities to support education, culture, and sports, creating an environment conducive to student success. Funding strategies, such as performance-based allocations, ensure resources are directed towards enhancing educational quality and rese
arch involvement. These efforts also support talent management and provide opportunities for social mobility.

Varga-Bajusz highlighted several programs supporting these goals, including mentoring and sports initiatives that have contributed to Hungary’s Olympic success. The Pannónia Scholarship Program and new scholarship systems aim to provide financial security for students.

Additionally, the government plans to launch a new dormitory development program, starting with a student city in Budapest to address accommodation shortages. Efforts to renew the Klebelsberg scholarship and improve student loan systems were also discussed, aiming to make higher education more accessible and practical.

The State Secretary stressed the importance of internationalization and cooperation with student representatives in shaping education policies. Attila Miseta, rector of the University of Pécs, and István András, vice-president of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference, echoed the need for continued collaboration to further
strengthen Hungarian higher education. They highlighted HÖOK’s longstanding commitment to student advocacy and support.
