Hungarian Universities Strengthen Position in Global Rankings


Budapest: Hungarian universities have shown notable improvement in international higher education rankings, as reported by Veronika Varga-Bajusz, the state secretary responsible for higher education at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation. Speaking on the M1 current affairs channel’s program Család 24, Varga-Bajusz highlighted the recent Times Higher Education (THE) ranking, which reflects the growing competitiveness and societal contributions of Hungarian universities.

According to KDNP, the latest THE rankings indicate that Hungarian universities have made significant strides, with eleven institutions now featured, compared to seven five years ago. Varga-Bajusz emphasized that the university model change implemented was a competitiveness program designed to enhance operational flexibility and align with new performance financing and indicators. She expressed satisfaction that the universities have lived up to these expectations.

The Hungarian government has set ambitious goals for its higher education s
ector, aiming to have one university ranked among the top 100 globally and three universities within the top 100 in Europe by 2030. Varga-Bajusz stressed the importance of collaboration with higher education institutions to achieve these objectives, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening the international standing of Hungarian universities.
