Hungarian Cardinal Peter Erdo Considered Heir to John Paul II

Vatican City: Papabile Peter Erdo of Hungary has been identified as a potential successor to Saint John Paul II, with some referring to him as the ‘anti-Francis’ candidate due to his more traditionalist and conservative stance compared to the current pontiff.

According to Ansa News Agency, Peter Erdo was born in Budapest in 1952 into a family of Catholic intellectuals and is the eldest of six children. His early life was marked by the invasion of Hungary by the Red Army, which resulted in the destruction of his home. He was ordained as a priest in 1975 and earned a doctorate in theology the following year. Erdo’s academic career includes positions as a professor of theology and canon law, rector of P©ter P¡zm¡ny Catholic University, and dean of the postgraduate institute of canon law.

Erdo’s ascent within the church began in 1999 when John Paul II appointed him as the titular bishop of Puppi and auxiliary of the diocese of Sz©kesfeh©rv¡r. In 2003, he was elevated to cardinal. As one of the five cardinal electors appointed by John Paul II, Erdo is seen as a significant figure within the conservative sectors of the church.

For a decade, Erdo served as president of the Hungarian Episcopal Conference and led the Council of European Episcopal Conferences, providing him a strong base for potential support. He has authored approximately 250 essays and twenty-five volumes on canon law and medieval history of canon law, showcasing both his firm doctrinal positions and willingness to engage in dialogue.

Erdo is a strong advocate for Europe’s Christian roots and voiced his traditionalist views during the 2015 synod, opposing the Eucharist for divorced and remarried individuals and clarifying that civil unions between homosexuals cannot equate to family. His stance on contraception aligns with ‘pro-life’ beliefs, and he holds a distinct perspective on refugees compared to Pope Francis’s open approach.

Despite their differences, Erdo has maintained a productive relationship with Francis throughout his pontificate. Known for his moderate and tactful demeanor, Erdo is well-versed in the dynamics of the cardinal assembly responsible for electing the Pope.
