Gaza Ceasefire Could Herald Regional Peace, Says Italian Foreign Minister
Gaza: The Gaza ceasefire could be the dawn of a possible peace for the entire Middle Eastern region, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told La Stampa newspaper ahead of his mission to Israel and the West Bank. Tajani, who is also deputy premier, emphasized the potential for a broader peace initiative in the region as he prepared for talks with his Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa’ar, Israeli President Isaac Herzog, and Palestinian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed Mustafa.
According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani expressed concerns about the fragility of the current truce, stating, “We are at the dawn of a possible peace that could involve the entire region.” He highlighted the risks posed by those opposed to stabilization, suggesting that Hamas might disrupt the agreement. Tajani proposed the involvement of an international body, such as the UN, to lead an interposition mission, emphasizing the need for Arab leadership in such efforts. He also mentioned Italy’s readiness to participate with a contingent, underlining the necessity of a European presence in the Middle East.
Tajani discussed the recognition of Palestine, describing it as a gradual process that requires mutual recognition between Palestine and Israel. He criticized unilateral initiatives by other countries, asserting that they do not benefit Palestine or contribute to peace.
Additionally, Tajani touched on Lebanon’s new phase and Italy’s proposal of General Diodato Abagnara for the leadership of the UNIFIL mission, noting positive feedback from Israeli and Lebanese authorities. On the subject of the war in Ukraine, Tajani expressed cautious optimism, mentioning former President Trump’s potential role in peace efforts and reiterating US support for Kiev. He suggested that this year might be favorable for reaching a ceasefire in Ukraine as well.
Regarding Italy’s relationship with Elon Musk and the potential use of the Starlink satellite system, Tajani remarked that it is a market matter, stressing the importance of ensuring the security of Italian data.
