Rome: The government has disbursed the first compensation to families of victims of atrocities committed in Italy by Nazi and Fascist forces during World War II. This payment follows a 2022 law enacted by the administration of former premier Mario Draghi, as announced by a member of the opposition, centre-left Democratic Party (PD), on Wednesday.
According to Ansa News Agency, PD Senator Dario Parrini, who serves as the vice president of the Upper House’s Constitutional Affairs Committee, stated that the economy ministry has paid 800,000 euros to the descendants of Metello Ricciarini. Ricciarini was one of the 244 individuals killed in a Nazi massacre in the Tuscan town of Civitella in Val di Chiana on June 29, 1944. This payment was determined by a ruling from the supreme court dating back to 2008.
Parrini emphasized that while this development is positive, it does not signify an end to the efforts required to ensure that the rights of the victims’ heirs are fully realized. He highlighted that numerous iss
ues persist, with other similar court rulings, both historical and recent, that have yet to be addressed by the economy ministry. Parrini criticized the ministry’s ongoing and inexplicable resistance to fulfilling these obligations.
