Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday emphasized the need for the European Union to enhance its effectiveness in repatriating illegal migrants, addressing the Senate ahead of an upcoming European Council meeting.
According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni expressed support for the European Commission’s proposal on a regulation for repatriations, describing it as a significant step towards harmonizing practices among member states and improving repatriation efficiency. She asserted that individuals entering Europe illegally should not be allowed to remain on European territory and must be repatriated.
The prime minister highlighted the government’s goal of significantly reducing landings in the central Mediterranean by decreasing departures from Tunisia and Libya and reducing irregular entries via other routes. Meloni pointed out that in 2024, such entries have decreased by 60% compared to 2023 and by 35% compared to 2022.
