Emilia-Romagna Witnesses Voluntary Death Amid Assisted Suicide Requests

Bologna: Right-to-die activist Marco Cappato, the treasurer of the Luca Coscioni Association, announced at a press conference that Emilia-Romagna authorities received three requests for assisted suicide, with one believed to have resulted in a voluntary death.

According to Ansa News Agency, Cappato revealed that the requests had received favorable opinions from regional authorities. He stated, “there were three requests with favorable opinion concerning assisted suicide, so we imagine that the whole procedure was completed, and one of these three cases was finalized therefore, if I must interpret it, it means the person had a voluntary death.”

Emilia-Romagna has not yet enacted a law allowing assisted suicide, but it has implemented an end-of-life regulation to navigate the legislative vacuum at the national level. The 2009 ‘Cappato ruling’ by the Constitutional Court permits assisted suicide in Italy under specific conditions, including irreversible pathology, unbearable suffering, and dependence on vital support treatments.

The court urged the Italian parliament to legislate on end-of-life issues, a call that remains unanswered.
