Cop Blast Trap Deaths ‘Not Unforeseeable’ Says Union

Verona: The deaths of three Carabinieri officers in a gas-canister blast trap during an eviction operation near Verona were described as “not unforeseeable” by a Carabinieri trade union. The incident occurred Tuesday morning, and the union emphasized that the tragedy was expected in the line of duty due to prior warning signs and threats issued by the evicted family.

According to Ansa News Agency, Vincenzo Romeo, general secretary of Pianeta Sindacale Carabinieri, stated that the tragedy at Castel D’Azzano was tragic but not unforeseen. He highlighted the inherent risks faced by Carabinieri officers, noting that every officer is aware that their duty could lead them to make the ultimate sacrifice. Romeo emphasized that this understanding is part of the responsibility of being a Carabinieri officer.

Romeo further expressed that the day is one of grief and silence. He called on politicians who have voiced their support to take meaningful action. He urged them to back their words with tangible measures that the union has been advocating for years. Romeo warned that without such actions, the expressions of support would remain merely words without substance.
