Conte Acknowledges Defeat in Marche Governor Race as Voter Turnout Drops

Marche: Left-wing populist 5-Star Movement (M5S) leader and former two-time premier Giuseppe Conte has admitted that the centre left’s proposal failed to sway voters in the Marche region. This admission follows the victory of centre right’s incumbent Francesco Acquaroli over centre left’s Matteo Ricci in the governor’s race for the mid-northern Adriatic region.

According to Ansa News Agency, Conte expressed concerns over a significant drop in voter turnout, which decreased by 10 points to 50% compared to five years ago. In a statement, Conte remarked, “The voter response in the Marche region rewards the continuity of Acquaroli’s outgoing presidency.” He added that while they offered a “serious alternative proposal” for change to the citizens, it did not succeed in convincing the majority of voters.

Conte emphasized the gravity of the low turnout, stating, “This is a very worrying fact that undermines the very foundations of our democracy and should give us all pause for thought.” He extended his gratitude to Matteo Ricci for his dedication to the new political project and to the voters who supported their cause. Conte also extended his best wishes to Francesco Acquaroli, hoping that his second term would meet the expectations of the people of Marche and serve the common interest.
