Concern Over Systematic Violation of International Law Expressed by Vatican

Vatican City: Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin on Monday expressed concern for the “systematic violation” of international law following a statement from Israel’s embassy to the Holy See. The embassy’s note claimed that the Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip was conducted in compliance with international legislation, in response to Pope Francis’s expressed sadness over “the resumption of heavy Israeli bombings” mentioned in his Angelus message.

According to Ansa News Agency, Cardinal Parolin emphasized the Vatican’s hope that Israel’s statements are accurate, but expressed worry over what he described as systematic violations of international law. He highlighted the importance of dialogue and peace, noting the Pope’s silence as a call for cessation of conflicts worldwide.

Parolin also mentioned discussions with the International Red Cross, underlining their struggles amidst the current situation. He criticized actions such as the bombing of civilians and the killing of humanitarian workers as violations of humanitarian law, signaling a troubling disregard for legal frameworks intended to protect human rights.

Israel’s embassy to the Holy See reiterated on Monday that its operations in the Gaza Strip are compliant with international law, emphasizing efforts to minimize civilian casualties. The statement accused Hamas of deliberately targeting civilians, while asserting Israel’s commitment to reducing collateral damage.

The embassy’s note further accused Hamas of repeatedly violating ceasefires to rebuild its military capabilities and mentioned that 59 hostages remain in Gaza under inhumane conditions. It stated that Israel considers it a moral duty to secure their release.

In his Angelus message on Sunday, Pope Francis expressed his sorrow over the renewed violence in Gaza, urging for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to dialogue. He called for the release of hostages and a definitive ceasefire, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation in the region and urging commitment from both the warring parties and the international community.
