Caivano’s Renewal Progresses with New Social Housing Initiative

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday announced a significant advancement in the renewal efforts of Caivano, marked by the initiation of the procedure for new social housing in the Naples-area town that was once plagued by Camorra influence and teen crime.

According to Ansa News Agency, Caivano drew national attention in 2023 following the shocking teen gang rape of two young cousins, aged 10 and 12. This incident catalyzed an urban regeneration scheme and prompted changes to youth criminal law. Premier Meloni expressed her satisfaction with the progress, stating in a video message, “Today I am happy to announce one more step for the future of Caivano.”

Meloni detailed the publication of a call for tenders aimed at redeveloping council properties in the Parco Verde district. These properties, originally built as a response to the 1980 Irpinia earthquake, have been neglected for decades. Over time, they fell into the hands of individuals convicted of Camorra-related crimes. The premier highlighted the government’s initial efforts to uphold the law by evicting those unlawfully occupying the homes.

The renewal project will focus on renovating and securing 750 apartments, along with enhancing green spaces, commercial areas, streets, and sidewalks. This extensive intervention, valued at over 130 million euros, is fully financed by the private sector. The aim is to provide quality homes that reflect the standards of a civilized nation to rightful residents.

Furthermore, Meloni revealed plans to apply the successful model from Caivano to other Italian regions requiring urban renewal. “Soon the citizens of Rozzano, Orta Nova, Rosarno, San Ferdinando, and certain neighborhoods in Rome, Naples, Catania, and Palermo will be able to count on a present, and a future, of decorum, beauty, legality and opportunity,” she stated.
