‘Progressive’ Candidate Silvia Salis Elected as New Mayor of Genoa
Genoa: ‘Progressive’ candidate Silvia Salis has been elected as the new mayor of Genoa after securing over 50% of the votes in the local elections held on Sunday and Monday. The final results, released by the interior ministry on Tuesday, confirmed her victory without the need for a runoff.
According to Ansa News Agency, Salis was supported by an alliance between the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) and the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S). She received 51.48% of the vote, surpassing the centre-right candidate Pietro Piciocchi, who garnered 44.20%.
In another electoral development, the centre-left’s Alessandro Barattoni won in the first round of voting in Ravenna. Meanwhile, the provincial capitals of Taranto and Matera will head to run-off votes on June 8 and 9, despite ‘anti-centre-right’ candidates leading in the initial round.
Salis, alongside PD leader Elly Schlein, emphasized that the election results highlight the significance of unity among opposition parties to challenge Premier Giorgia M
eloni’s ruling coalition.
