US-EU Engagement Must Be Political, Not Bureaucratic, Says Meloni

Bologna: Premier Giorgia Meloni emphasized the necessity for the European Union to engage with the United States on a political level rather than a bureaucratic one to prevent President Donald Trump from imposing significant tariffs on EU imports. “The relationship with the US is crucial to maintain the strength of the West,” Meloni stated during an assembly of the industrial employers’ association Confindustria.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni highlighted her proactive approach during a recent visit to Washington, where she proposed a meeting in Rome between the EU and the US. An initial meeting was held on May 18 at Palazzo Chigi, involving US Vice President JD Vance and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This meeting marked the beginning of a dialogue that Italy has continued to facilitate, which Meloni insists must progress with a more political approach.

In addition, Meloni expressed optimism about enhancing cooperation with Germany following the election of new Chancellor Friedrich Merz. She noted that she and Chancellor Merz have initiated discussions, indicating potential collaboration between Italy and Germany, the two largest manufacturers in Europe, which could lead to significant outcomes.

Meloni also addressed the urgent issue of high energy costs in Italy, responding to a call from Confindustria President Emanuele Orsini for measures to reduce the “unsustainable” expenses. The Premier mentioned that her government is examining the Italian market to identify any anomalies causing unjustified price hikes. Furthermore, she pointed out that around 60 billion euros have been allocated to mitigate energy costs, emphasizing that continuously using public funds is not a viable long-term solution.
