Brazilian Woman Stabbed to Death in Italy’s Latest Femicide Case

Rome: A Brazilian woman became Italy’s latest femicide victim on Tuesday when she was stabbed to death at her home in the town of Castelnuovo del Garda, near Verona. The prime suspect is the victim’s male partner, also a Brazilian, who has been arrested by Carabinieri police.

According to Ansa News Agency, the woman had reportedly called the police on previous occasions because of domestic abuse and had lost custody of a child from a previous relationship due to the violent situation at home. Italy continues to grapple with issues of gender-based violence, sparking legislative efforts to address the problem.

In July, the Senate unanimously approved a bill making femicide a specific felony under Italian criminal law. The bill prescribes life imprisonment for anyone causing the death of a woman through discrimination or hatred, or if the act aims to suppress the woman’s rights, freedoms, or personality. Furthermore, it sets new conditions for prison incentives and privileges for femicide convicts and reinforces obligations for educational and awareness initiatives to combat gender-based violence. The bill now awaits final approval in the Lower House.
