Bodies of Three Sudanese Sisters Brought to Lampedusa Following Rescued Migrant Operation

Lampedusa: The bodies of three sisters, aged 9, 12, and 17, from Sudan were brought ashore in Lampedusa on Saturday. They were among 68 migrants rescued by a Franco-Italian-German-Swiss NGO ship off the Libyan coast.

According to Ansa News Agency, another migrant tragically drowned after falling into the water before rescuers could reach him. The operation was carried out by SOS Mediterran©e, which reported a “violent and deliberate attack” by the Libyan Coast Guard. The organization claimed that the Libyan forces fired “hundreds of bullets” at their vessel, the Ocean Viking, shortly after it had rescued a rubber dinghy near Libya.

In a related development, the Mediterranea ship decided to transport 10 migrants rescued in the Strait of Sicily to Trapani, Sicily. This action was taken in defiance of the Interior Ministry’s guidance, which had designated Genoa as a safe harbor. “We have chosen to reaffirm human dignity and life,” declared Mediterranea Saving Humans.
