Sunny Start to Week in Italy, But New Low-Pressure System Approaches

Rome: Italy will see a sunny start to the week but a new low-pressure system is on the way, a top weatherman said Monday. The bad weather is giving Italy a break, but a sharp deterioration is already on the horizon, said Federico Brescia, meteorologist at iLMeteo.it.

According to Ansa News Agency, Hurricane Erin, now downgraded to an extratropical storm, will disrupt Italy’s weather scenario in the coming week. Brescia confirms a new and intense low-pressure system starting Thursday the 28th, with humid, warm winds coming directly from the subtropics, fueling the formation of extreme weather.

The start of the week will be characterized by mostly stable weather with partly cloudy skies almost everywhere, except for the usual heat storms in the inland mountains. It will also be quite warm in central and southern Italy, while in the north, temperatures will remain in line with averages for the period. However, the situation will begin to change on Wednesday the 27th.

Erin’s approach to the continent will bring a flow of very warm, humid air from subtropical latitudes, particularly affecting central and southern Italy and the major islands. Here, temperatures will rise significantly, with peaks exceeding 36-38°C and reaching 40°C in Abruzzo, the Apulian plains, Sicily, and Sardinia.

Conversely, the north will see a radical change, with the onset of a period of intense severe weather throughout the day. However, starting on Thursday the 28th, weather conditions will deteriorate sharply. Northern Italy, particularly Liguria and Piedmont, will experience heavy rain and thunderstorms, even stationary ones, typical of autumnal weather systems.

More than 100-150 mm of rain could fall in a single area within a few hours, with the real risk of flash flooding. The actual front will pass through on Friday, breaking this stasis, affecting virtually all of central and northern Italy. This will bring the possibility of downbursts and medium-large hailstorms.

Strong Sirocco winds are also possible during the pre-frontal phase, and Libeccio and Mistral winds are also possible towards the weekend. In detail: Monday the 25th will see good weather in the North, mostly good weather in the Center, and good weather in the South. On Tuesday the 26th, the North will be mostly sunny, the Center mostly sunny, and the South will experience some thunderstorms over the Apennines. Wednesday the 27th will bring increasing clouds from the western sectors in the North, mostly sunny with more clouds over the Tyrrhenian coasts in the Center, and sunny and hot conditions in the South.
