Beirut Hosts Inaugural Italian Film Festival with Premiere Screenings

Beirut: The Italian Embassy in Lebanon and the Italian Cultural Institute in Beirut, in collaboration with the Metropolis Art Cinema, have successfully launched the first edition of the Italian Film Festival in Beirut. The festival, a new cultural initiative, aims to bridge the gap in the knowledge of contemporary Italian cinema in Lebanon.

According to Ansa News Agency, the festival opened with the premiere of “Vermiglio” by Maura Delpero, marking its debut in both the Mediterranean and Middle East regions. It concluded with a unique film-concert of “‹€  Piccerella,” a significant piece of Italian silent cinema directed by Elvira Notari, Italy’s first woman director. The film was accompanied by an original electronic soundtrack that was composed and performed live, enhancing the cinematic experience.

The festival’s inception was driven by the desire to introduce current Italian film productions to the Lebanese audience, who are familiar with the classics but have limited exposure to contemporary works. The festival’s program included a diverse selection of films such as “Nonostante | Feeling Better” by Valerio Mastandrea, “Sulla terra leggeri | Weightless” by Sara Fgaier, “Quell’estate con Irene | My Summer with Irene” by Carlo Sironi, among others.

The initiative not only celebrated Italian cinema but also fostered cultural exchange between Italy and Lebanon, offering audiences a chance to explore modern narratives and filmmaking techniques emerging from Italy today.
