Istanbul: Addressing illegal migrant flows was one of the issues Premier Giorgia Meloni discussed with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Abdulhameed Mohamed Dabaiba, the Prime Minister of the Libyan Government of National Unity, during a trilateral meeting in Istanbul on Friday.

According to Ansa News Agency, the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation to manage migration flows, a challenge faced by all three nations. The Italian premier’s office released a statement highlighting the discussions on leveraging past experiences with Turkey to support Libya’s efforts in handling migration.

Prime Minister Meloni emphasized the importance of applying lessons learned from cooperation with Turkey to assist the Libyan Government of National Unity. The discussions included potential actions to combat international human trafficking networks, prevent irregular migrations, and support Libya in managing migratory pressures.

In addition to addressing migration, Meloni reiterated Italy’s commitment to Libya’s stability, unity, and independence. She expressed support for a Libyan-led political process facilitated by the United Nations, aiming to lead to elections.

The leaders agreed to continue their collaboration at the technical level to identify specific actions for joint implementation within an agreed timeframe. This commitment reflects a shared determination to address the complexities of migration in the region.
