Workplace Deaths in Italy Raise Concerns Over Safety Measures

Carpiano: A 60-year-old man has died after being struck by a vehicle while unloading goods at his company’s yard in Carpiano, near Milan. This incident marks Italy’s fourth fatal workplace accident within just two days.

According to Ansa News Agency, the recent surge in workplace fatalities has raised serious concerns. Earlier on Monday, a worker was electrocuted in the Ciociaria area between Rome and Naples. Additionally, a construction worker fell to his death near Naples, and another worker was killed at a metal plant in Veneto. These incidents have highlighted the urgent need for improved workplace safety measures across the country.

In response, Premier Giorgia Meloni announced that her government is allocating 650 million euros to enhance workplace health and safety measures, a move made just before the May Day national holiday last week. This funding is part of an effort to address the alarming increase in workplace deaths.

The Italian government is scheduled to meet with trade unions on Thursday to discuss the critical issue of health and safety in workplaces. This meeting aims to develop strategies to prevent further accidents and ensure the well-being of workers nationwide.

The workplace accident insurance agency INAIL reported on Monday that work-related deaths have risen by 8.37%, reaching a total of 205 fatalities in the first quarter of the year. This statistic underscores the urgent need for effective measures to protect workers and prevent future tragedies.
