Worker Dies in Packaging Company Accident in Perugia

Perugia: A worker died in an accident at a packaging company in Perugia, marking the latest incident in a growing series of fatal workplace accidents across Italy. The victim, whose name has not been released, was reportedly performing maintenance on machinery when the tragic incident occurred.

According to Ansa News Agency, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni has responded to the alarming increase in workplace fatalities by announcing the recruitment of 1,600 additional labor inspectors. This move comes as the national labor accidents and occupational illness agency, INAIL, reported 860 fatal work-related accidents in the first ten months of 2024. This figure represents a 2.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

The issue of workplace safety gained significant attention following the death of Satnam Singh, a 31-year-old Indian farm laborer, in June. Singh’s death was particularly shocking as he was found with a severed arm next to wrapping machinery, highlighting the risks faced by off-the-books workers. Additionally, five men died from toxic gas inhalation in a sewer network near Palermo in May, and a hydro power plant blast near Bologna claimed seven lives in April.

The latest multiple fatality incident occurred last month when five men died in a blast at an Eni fuels depot near Florence. These tragic events underscore a persistent trend of individual workplace deaths occurring almost daily across the country.
