Worker Dies in Construction Site Accident in Soresina

Soresina: Another tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday as a 35-year-old worker lost his life in a workplace accident at a construction site in Soresina, located in the province of Cremona. This marks the second fatality in just two days amidst a troubling trend of workplace deaths in Italy.

According to Ansa News Agency, initial investigations revealed that the victim, who was operating as a crane operator, inadvertently activated the bucket of his Bobcat. It is believed that the man, an Egyptian national residing in the province of Brescia, may have been attempting to retrieve something from the passenger compartment when the shovel hooked him and continued its downward motion, resulting in his instant death. The Carabinieri of Soresina and Cremona, alongside inspectors from ATS Val Padana, are currently examining the accident’s dynamics.

The previous day witnessed another tragic incident where a 59-year-old man was crushed by his dumper after it fell into a ravine at a marble quarry in Massa Carrara, Tuscany. These incidents contribute to the alarming statistics reported by unions, which indicate a 16% rise in workplace accidents in Italy, with 138 occurrences recorded in the first two months of the year compared to the same period last year.

President Sergio Mattarella expressed concern over the ongoing issue, stating that the “plague of workplace deaths” continues unabated, leaving numerous families devastated. He emphasized the need for strengthened commitments to workplace safety, involving institutions, businesses, and workers. Premier Giorgia Meloni announced that her government plans to introduce measures aimed at enhancing workplace health and safety in time for May Day, addressing the unacceptable frequency of labor-related deaths and injuries.
