Italy and Turkey Strengthen Ties with Nine New Agreements

Rome: A joint statement by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was unveiled alongside nine memoranda of understanding at the conclusion of the intergovernmental summit held at Villa Pamphilj. These agreements highlight the commitment to strengthening bilateral economic relations between Italy and Turkey.

According to Ansa News Agency, the summit saw the exchange of various agreements, including one between the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy and the Ministry of Industry and Technology of Turkey. This memorandum focuses on cooperation in the fields of science, technology, innovation, industry, and investment. Another significant agreement was signed between the space agencies of the two countries, aiming to promote cooperation in space activities for peaceful purposes.

Furthermore, the Ministries of Culture from both nations signed an agreement to combat the illicit trafficking of cultural goods, and a memorandum was established to enhance museum cooperation and promote archaeological heritage. Additional agreements include cooperation between the archives of the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Turkish State Archives, as well as collaboration on youth policies and sports.

In terms of social services, a memorandum of understanding was established between the Italian Ministry for Disabilities and the Turkish Ministry for Family and Social Services. Infrastructure cooperation was also highlighted, focusing on the use of international transport corridors, alongside the Ministry of Labor in Rome working with the Turkish Ministry for Family and Social Services.

During the summit’s closing remarks, Meloni expressed gratitude to Erdogan for his efforts to mediate on Ukraine and for reducing irregular migration from Turkey to Europe. Both leaders emphasized their joint commitment to stabilizing Libya and ensuring a democratic transition in Syria. Erdogan extended an invitation to Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella to visit Turkey, praising Meloni’s efforts to enhance Italo-Turkish relations. He also announced plans to boost cooperation on defense and energy while reaffirming support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
