Woman Receives Heart Transplant After 13-Year Wait Due to Rare Condition

Naples: A 57-year-old woman in Naples, who faced a life-threatening heart condition and had been incompatible with 97% of potential donors, received a transplant during the Christmas holidays after waiting 13 years, according to medical sources.

According to Ansa News Agency, the patient, whose identity remains undisclosed, suffered from a hypersensitive immune system, making her incompatible with most donors, a rarity in medical cases. The breakthrough came at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples, where a team of doctors, led by Claudio Marra, chief of the heart transplant center at the Azienda Ospedaliera dei Colli, performed the successful surgery.

The woman had been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and was hospitalized at Monaldi Hospital for the last six months. During her stay, she underwent a specialized therapy designed to reduce her antibodies, preparing her for the transplant. This therapy was part of a personalized medical plan developed by a team of 30 doctors, including heart surgeons, immunologists, and infectious disease specialists.

Following the successful heart transplant, the patient is currently recovering in the hospital. Medical sources report that she will soon be discharged and allowed to return home, marking the end of her long journey towards recovery.
