Wimbledon: Sinner Sweeps Aside Vukic to Get to 3rd Rd
Wimbledon: World number one Jannik Sinner on Thursday night swept aside world number 93 Aleksandar Vukic of Australia for the loss of just five games, 6-3 6-1 6-1, to get into the third round of a Wimbledon championship the three-time slam winner hopes will see his first title in South West London.
According to Ansa News Agency, the 23-year-old South Tyrolean, who recently lost an epic French Open final to world number two and five-time slam winner Carlo Alcaraz of Spain after holding three match points in the fourth set, will next play world number 52 Pedro Martinez, compatriot of the 22-year-old Murcia-born phenom.
Sinner, winner of two Aussie Opens and one US Open and who came back from a three-month doping ban just before Roland Garros, said after wrapping up victory on Centre Court: “I am very satisfied. Playing against Vukic is very difficult because he serves well. I tried to respond as best I could. I struggled to close out the last game. The centre court is always a special occasion.”
He added, “T
he next round with Martinez? The third rounds in the Slam tournaments are always difficult. There have been some surprises and you have to stay focused.”
Sinner also mentioned, “I feel like I’m in a good place but I can still improve on some things.”
