Von der Leyen Accused of Targeting Italian and EU Industry

Rome: European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen is facing criticism from Italy’s rightwing League party, led by Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini. The party has accused her of aiming to dismantle both Italian and EU industry.

According to Ansa News Agency, the League party expressed strong opposition to the European Commission’s proposal to cut emissions by 90% by 2040. The League described the proposal as “totally disconnected from the real world.” They argued that the EU’s current trajectory, influenced by Von der Leyen, is contributing to the hardships faced by businesses, workers, and families across Europe.

The League’s statement emphasized the need to avoid sacrificing entire production sectors for environmental goals. They criticized what they see as the EU’s adherence to “green ideology” and called for a shift towards practical solutions. Furthermore, the party urged the EU to recognize past mistakes, change objectives, and eliminate new taxes and restrictions, advocating for an approach rooted in common sense and practicality.
