Visitor Accidentally Damages 16th-Century Moretto Painting at Brescia Exhibition

Brescia: A woman accidentally caused significant damage to a 16th-century painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Moretto during an exhibition at Brescia’s Santa Giulia complex. The incident occurred on Friday when the visitor tripped and collided with the artwork, leading to a tear, as reported by the local newspaper Bresciaoggi on Saturday.

According to Ansa News Agency, the painting was not mounted on a wall but strategically placed at the entrance of one of the exhibition sections. This was because it serves as a standard, typically carried during processions featuring art on both sides. The artwork presents two unidentified saints on one side and the Virgin Mary with two disciples at her feet on the other.

The extent of the damage to the painting is considered significant, raising concerns about the preservation of this historical piece.
