Viktor Orban Discusses Peace Summit and Hungary’s Diplomatic Role

Budapest: In an exclusive interview with Mandiner, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban discussed his involvement in the recent international peace summit in Egypt, where significant progress was made in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Orban highlighted Hungary’s role in promoting peace and diplomatic success, particularly in light of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s praise of him as a “great man” and “fantastic person.”

According to About Hungary, Orban revealed that the invitation to the summit came unexpectedly on a Saturday evening, with the event scheduled for the following Monday in Sharm el-Sheikh. The Prime Minister expressed surprise at the invitation but emphasized Hungary’s belonging to a global network focused on peaceful conflict resolution. This network, he noted, is forming around Trump, with Hungary playing a key role due to its peace-oriented foreign policy.

Orban also addressed the domestic political implications of his participation in the summit, noting that while the ma
jority of the Hungarian public viewed it as a diplomatic success, the opposition struggled to comprehend the significance of the invitation. Orban attributed Hungary’s presence to its consistent stance on peace and its integration into a network of leaders seeking peaceful solutions to conflicts worldwide.

The Prime Minister also commented on the absence of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, asserting that Hungary effectively represented her at the summit. He underscored Hungary’s commitment to peace, which aligns with the objectives of the summit and the broader international community.

The interview further covered Orban’s relationship with Trump, highlighting the former U.S. President’s confidence in Orban’s re-election prospects in 2026. Orban emphasized that while personal relationships can aid diplomatic efforts, Hungary’s interests remain paramount in determining foreign policy.

Regarding the European Union’s stance on the Ukrainian-Russian conflict, Orban criticized European leader
s for their belligerent stance, arguing that peace could have been achieved if Europeans aligned with Trump’s policies. He urged European leaders to engage directly with Russia to negotiate a secure future for Europe.

As the EU summit approaches, Orban detailed his plans to represent Hungary’s position, emphasizing the importance of securing public support through a signature campaign. He reiterated Hungary’s opposition to Ukrainian EU accession and the use of frozen Russian assets, citing potential negative repercussions for Hungarian interests.

The interview concluded with Orban reflecting on the complexities of international diplomacy and the need for humility and perseverance in peace negotiations. Despite the challenges, he remains committed to advocating for peace and representing Hungary’s interests on the international stage.
