VDL’s ReArm Plan Faces Criticism for Clashing with EU Values

Rome: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s ambitious plan to allocate 800 billion euros for the rearmament of Europe is facing criticism for conflicting with the core values of the European Union, as expressed by journalist Michele Serra in a recent editorial. Serra, who has organized a pro-EU demonstration in Rome scheduled for March 15, shared his concerns in the Italian newspaper la Repubblica.

According to Ansa News Agency, Serra emphasized that those attending the demonstration are aware of the tension between von der Leyen’s proposed armed response and the foundational principles of the EU. In his editorial, Serra, a seasoned liberal journalist and commentator, highlighted the perceived neglect of a unified European defense strategy, which he believes should have been established years ago but is only being addressed now due to current pressures.
