US Calls for Halt in Israel-Iran Strikes Amid Rising Tensions

WASHINGTON: The United States has called for an immediate cessation of retaliatory strikes between Israel and Iran, while asserting its preparedness to defend Israel in the event of Iranian retaliation. A senior American official conveyed the message as tensions continue to escalate between the two nations.

According to Anadolu Agency, the senior official emphasized the need for an end to the exchange of fire, stating that the US is ready to support Israel should Iran choose to respond to Israeli actions. The official described Israel’s recent strikes on Iranian military facilities as targeted measures intended to deter further aggression, urging nations with influence to pressure Iran into halting its attacks.

The official further mentioned that the US has communicated its stance to Iran through both direct and indirect channels, expressing a willingness to lead efforts towards securing peace in the region. This includes pursuing a resolution to the conflict in Lebanon and achieving a cease-fire in Gaza, w
ith a focus on the safe return of displaced civilians and hostages.

White House National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett clarified to Anadolu that the US is not involved in Israel’s military operations. He reiterated the US’s commitment to diplomacy and de-escalation in the Middle East, urging Iran to cease its aggressive actions to prevent further escalation.

The Israeli military reported completing targeted airstrikes on Iranian military sites following Iran’s large-scale missile attack on Israel earlier this month. Iran, in turn, has signaled its readiness to retaliate against what it describes as Israeli aggression. The initial Iranian attack was reportedly in response to the assassinations of significant figures linked to Hamas and Hezbollah.

This latest round of hostilities marks an escalation in a year already fraught with tension, following incidents such as the Israeli bombing of Iran’s Embassy in Syria in April and Iran’s subsequent missile and drone strikes on Israel.
