Upping Bank Taxes? Giorgetti Advises Caution on Numerous Proposals

Rome: Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has issued a warning to be cautious regarding the multiple proposals circulating about increasing taxes on Italy’s highly profitable banks. These measures aim to enhance their contributions to national finances.

According to Ansa News Agency, Giorgetti addressed reporters’ inquiries about a potential target for the banks’ financial contributions. He emphasized the presence of numerous proposals, cautioning against imitations and highlighting the complexity involved. Giorgetti likened the situation to preparing a complex recipe, suggesting that the outcome depends on careful execution.

In response to questions about the government’s timeline for discussions with the banks, Giorgetti confirmed plans to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including banks, unions, and entrepreneurs. He noted that while unions and employers are aware of the meeting dates, the banks are not yet informed. However, he assured that the Italian Banking Association (ABI) would be included in the discussions, which involve numerous parties and acronyms.
