UN Is Under Attack and Must Be Defended Says Mattarella

Rome: The United Nations is under attack and needs to be defended, Italian President Sergio Mattarella said in an interview with ‘La Voce di New York’, an Italian English Digital Daily in the US. “The 80th anniversary of the UN is a crucial moment for reflection,” Mattarella said.

According to Ansa News Agency, Mattarella emphasized the significant role the United Nations has played in shaping the international order by promoting shared values such as peace, security, and international cooperation. He highlighted the importance of the principles of peaceful coexistence and how they are rooted in the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Mattarella asserted that the system established by these principles remains highly relevant today, especially in light of the consequences when they are not observed. He stressed the need to defend these values, as they are currently under attack. The alternative, he warned, would be a return to a world characterized by constant instability and governed by shifting power dynamics, reminiscent of the conditions that led to World War II. The San Francisco Charter, he noted, aimed to redeem the international community from such turmoil.
