Trump Proposes Three-Way Meeting with Putin and Zelensky in Rome
Washington: United States President Donald Trump asked Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni if Italy would be willing to host in Rome the three-way meeting on the war in Ukraine he initially proposed with him, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a telephone call on Thursday, sources said on Friday.
According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni said Italy would be willing to host the meeting. Consequently, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio communicated with France, Germany, Britain, Ukraine, and Finland about the proposal, and Zelensky expressed support for the idea.
The sources added, however, that Moscow will not consent to the meeting taking place in Rome because it considers Italy too aligned with Kyiv. A Russian source told Tass that the meeting will not be held in the EU, suggesting that the UAE or Turkey are seen as the most likely venues for the summit.
Putin has so far refused to commit to meeting Zelensky, but the Kremlin stated that he and Trump have agreed to meet in the coming days.
