Truck Driver Loses Life in Warehouse Accident Near Vicenza

Vicenza: A truck driver died in a warehouse accident near Vicenza on Thursday, marking the second workplace fatality in Italy on the same day. A truck maneuvering inside an industrial warehouse struck a beam, which collapsed and hit the cab of the tractor-trailer, ultimately resulting in the driver’s death.

According to Ansa News Agency, the accident took place in Montecchio Maggiore (Vicenza) on Via Ponte Gu¡ at the Geo Scavi srl company, which specializes in recovering earth and rock from excavations. Firefighters responded to the scene and, based on initial reports, evacuated the facility to ensure safety.

Earlier on Thursday, another workplace incident claimed the life of a 62-year-old Italian worker at Ticino Lamiere spa in Bubbiano, a municipality located south of Milan. The worker was crushed while working on a reel for the production of steel strip. The reasons behind the incident are currently under investigation. Colleagues initially rescued the man, and firefighters arrived shortly after, but his condition was critical.

Three emergency vehicles from the Via Messina command, along with emergency medical services, were dispatched to the scene. The Carabinieri and the ATS local health office have also been involved and will investigate the circumstances leading to the worker’s death.

Workplace fatalities remain a significant issue in Italy, with Premier Giorgia Meloni’s government emphasizing the importance of enhancing health and safety measures. In its annual report released in July, the workplace accident and occupation illness insurance agency INAIL reported a slight increase in work-related deaths, rising to 1,202 last year.
