Trieste Ship Opens to the Public in Lisbon Port

Lisbon: The Italian Navy’s multirole amphibious ship, Trieste, opened its hatches to the public this Saturday in the port of Lisbon. This follows a reception held Friday evening, attended by Italian Ambassador to Portugal Claudio Miscia and a delegation from the Portuguese Navy. The vessel is noted as the largest ship commissioned in Italy since World War II.

According to Ansa News Agency, the Trieste was constructed by Fincantieri and Leonardo at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard, with its final outfitting completed at the Muggiano shipyard. The ship was launched on May 25, 2019, and officially handed over to the Italian Navy on December 7, 2024. The handover was marked by a solemn ceremony attended by President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. The ITS Trieste serves as the flagship of the Italian Amphibious Operations Group and is equipped for amphibious operations, logistical support, air missions, and humanitarian interventions.

The ship arrived in Lisbon after departing on July 21, carrying 146 ca
dets. This year’s training campaign was adjusted due to the unavailability of the Amerigo Vespucci, which is undergoing major maintenance following a recent round-the-world voyage. Among the cadets on board are six international participants from Libya, Azerbaijan, Tunisia, and Djibouti.

The Trieste is scheduled to leave the port of Lisbon on Sunday, August 3.
