Top Court Upholds Life Sentence for Bellini in Bologna Bombing Case

Rome: The Supreme Court of Cassation on Tuesday upheld a life sentence for former rightist militant Paolo Bellini for his involvement in the 1980 bombing at Bologna train station. The attack resulted in the deaths of 85 people and injuries to 200 more.

According to Ansa News Agency, Bellini, previously a member of Avanguardia Nazionale (National Vanguard), was convicted of being the fifth bomber in collaboration with former NAR members Giusva Fioravanti, Francesca Mambro, Luigi Ciavardini, and Gilberto Cavallini. This bombing on August 2, 1980, stands as the deadliest event during Italy’s Years of Lead, a period marked by political violence.

The supreme court also confirmed a six-year sentence for former Carabinieri captain Piergiorgio Segatel for obstructing the investigation into the bombing. Additionally, Domenico Catracchia, a condo manager from Rome, received a four-year sentence for providing false information to investigators.
