Chiara Poggi Killer Alberto Stasi Stays on Day Release

Milan: Alberto Stasi, a 41-year-old man serving a 16-year sentence for the 2007 murder of his girlfriend Chiara Poggi, had his day release privileges upheld by the Supreme Court of Cassation. Stasi, convicted in 2015 for the crime that took place in Garlasco near Pavia, was initially granted partial day release in April. This decision allows him to leave Bollate Prison during the day for work and social reintegration activities, returning in the evenings.

According to Ansa News Agency, the Milan prosecutors’ appeal against the April 11 decision permitting Stasi’s day release was rejected by the court. Stasi, formerly an economics student at Milan’s Bocconi University, now works as a bookkeeper. The court’s decision supports his continued participation in reintegration programs outside of prison.

The murder case took a new turn when DNA evidence from Andrea Sempio, a friend of Poggi’s brother Marco, was discovered on Poggi’s fingernails. This discovery prompted a reopening of the case in March. Sempio, now 37, is under scrutiny as a new suspect in the ongoing investigation.

Stasi expressed his belief in the justice system on March 12, stating his confidence that the truth will eventually emerge. The case remains under investigation with new evidence potentially altering the course of justice.
