The Iconic Amerigo Vespucci Returns: A Symbolic Embrace of Italy

Trieste: The sky over Trieste was painted in green, white, and red as the silhouette of the Amerigo Vespucci, the world’s most renowned sailing ship, emerged on the horizon. The Frecce Tricolori aerobatics team soared among the ship’s masts, symbolically accompanying its return to Italy after a 20-month, 46,000-nautical-mile global tour.

According to Ansa News Agency, Trieste welcomed what is often dubbed the “most beautiful ship in the world” with a spectacular escort of 1,333 boats participating in a special edition of the Barcolana regatta. The Riva del Mandracchio, a central part of the city, marked not only the conclusion of this world tour but also the commencement of a Mediterranean circuit. Over the next three months, the ship will visit 17 ports, including foreign stops in Durres, Albania, and Valletta, Malta.

Luca Andreoli, CEO of Difesa Servizi, the Ministry of Defense’s in-house company responsible for planning the tour, expressed the significance of the event by stating, “It is a hug that we send to Italy and the Italians.” Families on the dock greeted the ship with warm embraces, while the Navy’s latest addition, the aircraft carrier Trieste, stood ready in the port.

Tradition and innovation converged in the gulf of the Julian capital, symbolizing a passing of the baton 94 years after the Amerigo Vespucci first set sail. Captain Giuseppe Lai, the ship’s commander, reflected on this moment, recalling black and white images of the past as he watched the city approach.

The sailing ship will continue its journey along the Italian coast until June 10, sharing stories from its recent voyages. Admiral Enrico Credendino, Chief of Staff of the Navy, noted, “Up until now we have brought Italy to the world, today the Vespucci brings the world to Italy.”

Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto, though absent due to pneumonia, emphasized the importance of each stop as an opportunity for growth and sharing. General Luciano Portolano, Chief of Defence Staff, highlighted the Amerigo Vespucci’s role in promoting Italian excellence and traditions through initiatives like the Villaggio Italia.

The event was hosted by Trieste’s Mayor Roberto Dipiazza and Friuli Venezia Giulia’s President Massimiliano Fedriga, who remarked on the success achieved through teamwork during the Vespucci tour.
