Teenage Woman Detained in Italy for Alleged ISIS Affiliation.
Milan: Italian police reported the arrest of a 19-year-old woman, Hafsa Bakari Mohamed, at Bergamo’s Orio al Serio airport while she was allegedly attempting to leave the country to join the Islamist group ISIS. Mohamed, a Kenyan-born resident of Milan, was apprehended on Saturday with a one-way ticket to Istanbul. Authorities suspect her plan was to travel from Turkey to Syria to fight with the jihadist group.
According to Ansa News Agency, the arrest was the result of ongoing surveillance of radical, jihadist online activities, which identified Mohamed as a potential foreign fighter. She is believed to have undergone a process of radicalization, and a Milan judge stated in the arrest warrant that she was at the “total disposal” of ISIS. Mohamed allegedly participated in radical propaganda, appearing in a niqab and sharing images online where she is seen making a typical ISIS gesture and discussing martyrdom. She also portrayed herself as a “woman fighter” while holding a rifle.
