Tariff Retaliation Criticized by Salvini

Rome: Deputy Premier, Transport Minister, and rightwing Laague party leader Matteo Salvini expressed his opinion on Tuesday, stating that retaliating against US President Donald Trump’s tariffs is not a smart move. He expressed hope that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had been misunderstood when she indicated that the EU was prepared to respond to Trump’s tariff actions from April 2.

According to Ansa News Agency, Salvini questioned the wisdom of engaging in trade wars with the US, describing such actions as unfortunate and not in anyone’s interest. He emphasized that resolving these issues should occur through negotiation rather than conflict. Salvini previously criticized tariffs imposed by Brussels, which he claimed harmed entire sectors in Italy and Europe, advocating instead for dialogue with Trump.

Salvini further commented on the matter, stating that negotiation and trade with the Trump administration are necessary. He emphasized that taking retaliatory actions is not a productive approach and acknowledged that Trump was elected to serve American interests.
