TAR Blocks Salvini’s Order to Limit Transport Strike to Four Hours

ROME: The regional administrative court of Lazio has ruled against Transport Minister Matteo Salvini’s directive to shorten a planned 24-hour transport strike to just four hours. The decision was in response to an appeal by the USB union, which had organized the strike for December 13.

According to Ansa News Agency, the administrative court found no sufficient grounds for Salvini’s back-to-work order, noting it lacked backing from Italy’s strike watchdog. The court asserted that the anticipated disruptions from the strike were typical for such protests and did not justify the reduction in strike hours, as the stoppage would not interfere with guaranteed service periods for commuters.

This ruling contrasts with a previous decision by TAR Lazio last month, which upheld Salvini’s order to limit a strike by various unions scheduled for November 29. That order reduced the general strike called by the CGIL and UIL unions against the 2025 budget to four hours, affecting sectors such as local public transport, air
transport, and maritime transport.
