Tajani Urges Iran to Keep Strait of Hormuz Open Amid Tensions

Brussels: Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated on Monday that he has urged Tehran not to close the Strait of Hormuz following the US strikes on its nuclear sites. This request was made during a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani expressed his concerns about the potential economic impact of closing the strait, which could significantly affect not only Iran but also other countries, including China. These remarks were made during the European foreign affairs council held in Brussels. Tajani also spoke with his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa’ar, on the same day.

Tajani reported receiving attentive responses from Iranian officials regarding Italy’s proposals and suggestions. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of Italian nationals in Iran and maintaining the operation of Italy’s embassy there. He noted that this concern remains pressing as some other EU member countries have closed their embassies. Tajani also highlighted his recommendation for de-escalation and encouraged the resumption of direct dialogue between Tehran and the United States.
